WATCH: 2013 NBA Draft Prospect Breakdown – Steven Adams

If you’re a team looking for size in the middle, Steven Adams might be your guy.  However, he’s a project that will likely take some time to develop.

At just 19 years old, Adams is a raw talent.  But the 7-foot, 255 lbs. center out of Pittsburgh has physical attributes you just can’t teach.  Averaging just 7.2 points in 23.4 minutes per game, Adams is not a particularly effective scorer and may never will be.  His strengths are on the defensive end, where uses his quickness to move fluidly around the floor and protect the rim.  In his lone season with the Panthers, he averaged two blocks per contest.

How does Adams see himself contributing at the next level?  Here’s what he told reporters at last month’s NBA Draft Combine.

High energy guy, running the lane.  I like transition, so running up and down, stuff like that.  But also just being physical.  I’m working on my post game now, so that’s eventually going to come around too and when it does, I think I’m gonna dominate that.  But, I don’t think I’m going to go in there straight away and dominate.  I will dominate say certain tasks that they put me up to.

Adams cited Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka as NBA big men whose games he admires.  He could certainly fit in the Kings’ future  if continues to develop on the defensive end of the floor.  But again, he is a project and like Rudy Gobert, another big man the Kings recently worked out, Adams probably wouldn’t be able to contribute much early on in his career.

Mike Schmitz, an assistant video coordinator for the D-League’s Bakersfield Jam and former contributor to TrueHoop Network affiliate Valley of the Suns, has been putting together video scouting reports of prospects for Draft Express the last two years.  Get to know more about Adams in Schmitz’s breakdown below.
