Cowbell Kingdom Podcast Ep 24: Isaiah Thomas on rookie life, Jamal Crawford’s decision and more

A busy Thursday at Power Balance Pavilion yesterday.  We caught up with Sacramento Kings rookie point guard Isaiah Thomas during Kings Media Day for this week's edition of the Cowbell Kingdom Podcast. Highlights
  • Is it sometimes tough being a rookie on a team full of experienced young players? "It is, because at the same time, we're the same age, so it's like "why are you telling me to do that?"  But at the same time, they've got some years in the league and they've been here for a few more years than I have, so I turn to them guys for advice any chance I can anyway."
  • Thomas thought friend and fellow Washington-native Jamal Crawford was going to be a Sacramento King.  He says he speaks to Crawford on a daily basis about all things.  But the last four or five conversations centered on where the now-Portland Trailblazers was going to play this season.
  • DeMarcus Cousins sprained his right ankle by stepping on Thomas' foot.  The rookie point tells us how the injury went down.

Kings Training Camp Recap: Day 4

The coaching staff on day 2 of camp.

Yesterday was a disappointing day at the practice facility.  Media availability changed from evening sessions to morning sessions for Monday and Tuesday, leaving us with a front row seat to an empty gym.  Eventually a few players trickled in to shoot - Tyreke Evans, Francisco Garcia and Lawrence Hill.  A couple more came out for interviews after Coach Paul Westphal spoke.  But over all, it was a quiet day at training camp. ... Similar to last off-season, Kings fans have been clamoring for a glimpse of Tyreke Evans' preseason jump shot.  A few weeks ago we saw Evans at the Goon Squad Classic and although he scored over 50 points and hit plenty of jumpers, his distinct upper body fall-away was back.  That is not what we saw today. Preseason Interview: Marcus Thornton

Marcus Thornton

On the first day of training camp, I caught up with Sacramento Kings guard Marcus Thornton.  He had just signed a lucrative four-year, $31-33 million deal to stay with the Kings after they traded for him midway through last season.  If the 27-game, small sample size was any indication of what Thornton can do for the Kings going forward, the deal will end up being a bargain. While Thornton looks ready to take on any challenge on the court, his demeanor off the court is much different.  He is quiet, respectful and honest.   Coming off his rookie contract, Thornton had major decisions to make this summer in regards to his future in the NBA.  As a free agent, Thornton turned down multiple offers from European teams during the lockout, even with the chance of a cancelled NBA season.  In the end, patience paid off for the 24-year old shooting guard out of LSU.   CK: It was fun to watch you tweeting on Friday night, the emotional response.  Talk a little about that, finding out you got your new contract. MT:  It was kind of emotional.  There wasn't no boo-hooing, it was just a couple of tears of joy me and my mom shared.  But it's over with and it's down to business now. ... More
