Cowbell Kingdom Draft Profile: Kemba and Co.

Left - Kemba Walker, Right - Nikola Vucevic

For the third time this offseason, the Sacramento Kings conducted a six-man draft workout.  Today, UConn's Kemba Walker headlined the group that included only one other prospect expected to go in the first round - Nikola Vucevic.  The curtain stayed down for all but ten minutes of the workout, leaving media wanting more.  But what we did see was not the most impressive offensive performance of Kemba Walker's career. Video interviews and analysis after the jump. ... More

Video: Bismack Biyombo & Donatas Motiejunas Eurocamp Workouts

Footage from yesterday's Adidas Eurocamp workouts featuring international draft prospects Donatas Motiejunas and Bismack Biyombo.  According to reports, both were less than impressive to NBA scouts and brass in attendance.  But consider the defensive skills of a player like Biyombo would probably show better in a scrimmage ... Adidas Eurocamp Day 1: Montiejunas & Biyombo Lackluster in Workouts

A showcase of some of the top international talent is taking place right now in Treviso, Italy.   Day one of the Adidas Eurocamp wrapped up yesterday.  Some notes and quotes from those in attendance: Scott Howard-Cooper, NBA.com On Bismack Biyombo
The Biyombo workout was interesting as a rare public look at a prospect who has not played in months, after splitting with his team in Spain, and was barely known in the United States even when he was in a lineup. It just wasn’t good. The entire premise was a bad idea. Biyombo, a power forward from the Republic of Congo, is a stud athlete who blocks shots and rebounds. That would have come out in a game, where he could light up the gym by flying around the rim and overpowering opponents. In one-on-none drills, NBA evaluators got to observe bad hands and an offensive game that everyone agrees will be a non-factor in the league, all the way to a bad showing at the line. Dibs on trademarking “Hack a ‘Mack.” Opponents will foul Biyombo every time he has the ball within dunking distance, also known as his maximum shooting range. The encouraging news is that an executive with one team said Biyombo did much better at a recent individual workout in Spain by catching balls a club official purposely threw wild to gauge reaction and hands. But nothing hides the zero offense of a player tracking to the top 10.
On Donatas Montiejunas
The Motiejunas workout was better but hardly worth the top of the resume either. While he showed the agility and a shooting touch uncommon at 6-feet-11 power forward, the lottery-bound power forward appeared tired to those who had watched him during the season.

Cowbell Kingdom Podcast Ep 4: Dave Rose, Head Coach BYU Basketball

Yesterday, we met perhaps the most popular prospect in this year's NBA Draft when Jimmer Fredette worked out for the Sacramento Kings.  Today, we had the pleasure of talking with someone who knows Jimmer on and off the court best.  BYU Cougars Men's Basketball Head Coach Dave Rose joins us today on the Cowbell Kingdom Podcast. Highlights
  • On the challenges of coaching BYU considering the religious dynamic: "The other teams, they lose players after their freshmen year and they go onto the NBA and they never get them back.  So I just kind of look at it in a positive light that they're coming home in a year or two and we'll get them back in the program."
  • Regarding Jimmer's coachability, Coach Rose pointed out Fredette's experience playing in Las Vegas with Team USA last summer.  Rose says that Team USA coaches in the college ranks were impressed with Fredette's ability to pick up concepts quickly.
  • On Jimmer's defensive prospects: "I think that he'll be fine.  He's extremely athletic, a lot more than people think.  And then he has great upper body strength.  I think if he gets in the right system, with the right coaches, guys spending time with him - he'll find a way to be able to defend so that he can really help his team offensively."
  • Where Jimmer ranks among the players he's played with and coached: "Well, I think he's the best offensive player that has ever been on my team, either as a player or a coach, as far as his ability to just make big shots and kind of will your team out of spots during the game." (Note: Coach Rose played with Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler as a member of the great Phi Slamma Jamma Houston Cougar teams of the early 1980s.)

Kawhi Leonard knows what tweaking his jumper needs

Kawhi Leonard was in DC today, working out for the Washington Wizards.  Mike Prada of SB Nation Basketball and Bullets Forever attended and liked what he saw of Leonard's weakest skill: Overall, I was impressed with the way Leonard's shot looked.  Again, the caveat here is that we're talking about a small sample size, but ... The Kings worked out point guard Brandon Knight yesterday.

Cowbell Kingdom Draft Profile: Brandon Knight.

Today is day number one for draft prospects to start coming through Sacramento.  Things have been relatively quiet so far this draft season, with most teams taking part in multi-team, multi-player workouts put on by host teams around the country.  Brandon Knight is the Kings' first visitor, coming to Sacramento to take part in a battery of tests and drills with the team's front office brass before being thrown to the media wolves.  The freshman out of Kentucky is considered one of the top point guard prospects in this year's NBA draft and is drawing attention all the way from spot #3 to pick #7, where the Kings sit anxiously waiting.  Knight measured well at the NBA combine, showing good height, leaping ability and quickness to go with a very nice wingspan. ... Over at SLAM: 2011 SLAMonline Mock Draft

I participated in the guessing game that is SLAM's annual mock draft.   I pretended I was Kings GM for a day and picked Kemba Walker with the 7th pick.  Here's a little bit why: The Kings don’t necessarily need a playmaking point guard. Rather, they could use a one who can play off-the-ball and hit open shots, while Evans ... More
