The NBA took a major stand against one of its own Tuesday when commissioner Adam Silver dropped a lifetime ban and a $2.5-million fine on Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for racially insensitive comments that came to light over the weekend.

An impassioned Silver took the podium, stared directly into the camera and instantly won the day with seven basic words that very few people saw coming.

“I am banning Mr. Sterling for life,” Silver said.
