Sacramento Kings officially announce the hiring of Chris Mullin

There have been plenty Chris Mullin sightings over the last few months in Sacramento.  He has been seen outside the Kings practice facility and even celebrating the drafting of top pick Ben McLemore.  But until today, we have had no official confirmation on the hiring of the former NBA star and front office executive.  Now that has changed.

The Kings announced today the formal hiring of Mullin as an Advisor to the Chairman.

“Chris Mullin is an incredible addition to our organization,” owner and chairman Vivek Ranadivé said in the teams official press release.  “I have great respect for his accomplishments and understanding of the game.  From day one, we have focused on making the Sacramento Kings a first-class franchise built for the 21st Century.  Chris brings the experience, knowledge, and influence to help us achieve our ultimate goal—bringing a championship to the fans and city of Sacramento.  As we prepare for the new season and a new era in Kings basketball, I’m really excited about the group of visionary leaders we’ve brought together.”

The Hall of Fame forward spent 16 seasons in the NBA as a player with the Golden State Warriors and Indiana Pacers.  He was a five time All-Star and won two Olympic gold medals as a member of Team USA.

After his playing days, Mullin joined the Warriors front office, spending five seasons with the team from 2004-2009.  That is where he met current Kings general manager Pete D’Alessandro and the two developed a strong bond.  It was on Mullin’s recommendation that Ranadivé interviewed and eventually hired D’Alessandro in Sacramento.

“I couldn’t be more excited about joining the Kings and playing a part in making this team a winner again,” Mullin added in the press release. “I’m especially grateful for the unique opportunity to work in close proximity with a world-class ownership group led by Vivek Ranadivé and the talented group of individuals assembled in our front office.”

It appears that Mullin will hold a similar advisory role with the Kings to what NBA legend Jerry West has with the Golden State, Ranadivé’s former team.
