Cowbell Kingdom Podcast Ep 57: ESPN.com’s Royce Webb talking #NBARank

by Jonathan Santiago & James Ham

Isaiah Thomas experienced a dramatic rise in ESPN’s annual NBA player rankings this year.

Over the last few weeks, ESPN has been rolling out its second-annual NBA player rankings for the upcoming 2012-13 season.  ESPN.com NBA Editor Royce Webb joins us for a breakdown.

Excerpt

Webb on how accurate he believes the rankings are:

It’s impossible to sit here and vouch for every single rating and ranking.  Obviously, this is eye-of-the-beholder stuff to some degree.  But people should keep in mind, it’s not one small group selecting this.  We don’t sit in a room and come up with a rating for each player.  We ask all these diverse people from all over the country, and sometimes occasionally outside the U.S., to just provide a rating for each player and then let the chips fall where they may.

So, the short answer is, this is, in general, a very accurate way to assess this.  Doesn’t mean it’s perfect, but it does have a high degree of validity.

Kings players revealed so far on the rankings:

445.  Tyler Honeycutt (ranked 433 last year)
348.  Travis Outlaw (ranked 271 last year)
313.  James Johnson (ranked 355 last year)
305.  Jimmer Fredette (ranked 273 last year)
264.  Francisco Garcia (ranked 233 last year)
263.  John Salmons (ranked 164 last year)
228.  Jason Thompson (ranked 211 last year)
215.  Thomas Robinson
189.  Aaron Brooks (ranked 118 last year)
178.  Chuck Hayes (ranked 131 last year)
150.  Isaiah Thomas (ranked 464 last year)
