2011 NBA Draft Lottery: Good To Be Fifth?

The Kings have the fifth-best odds of winning today’s NBA Draft Lottery.  And based on history, that could be a good thing.  The team in said position has landed a top-three pick 10 times under the current system.

1st Overall Pick

2010 Washington Wizards
2006 Toronto Raptors
2002 Houston Rockets
1995 Golden State Warriors

2nd Overall Pick

2007 Seattle SuperSonics
1998 Vancouver Grizzlies
1997 Philadelphia 76ers
1993 Philadelphia 76ers

3rd Overall Pick

2005 Portland Trailblazers
2001 Atlanta Hawks

So how’s that rank against other top projected slots in the draft lottery era?

Projected Slot Lottery Births
1st 12
5th 10
3rd 8
2nd 7
4th 6

The Kings had the third-best odds of winning the lottery last year but ended up selecting fifth.  They had the best odds of winning in 2009 and fell to fourth.  If you believe in karmic justice, perhaps luck will be in the Kings favor today.
